Sebastian Nebe
ABOUT THE ARTIST
The German painter Sebastian Nebe was born in 1982 in Blankenburg, Harz, and lives and works in Berlin. He is among the remarkable voices of the Newest Leipzig School, continuing its artistic heritage with a contemporary sensibility.
In Nebe’s painting, cinematic staging, poetic void, and emotional depth merge into visual worlds that appear both familiar and enigmatic. His large-scale works in oil on paper often depict deserted landscapes, dark forests, abandoned houses, or quirky relics of everyday life, serving as projection surfaces for memory, identity, and social conditions.
Nebe’s visual language is characterized by a reduced, almost sketch-like gesture that, despite traditional glazing techniques, possesses a modern, graphic expression.
From early series like Untitled (Settings) to current groups of works, his paintings reflect the ambivalence between isolation and belonging, between romantic longing and the harsh reality of our time. In them, humanity is not always directly visible, yet the traces and places left behind open up space for empathy and interpretation.
Nebe has realized numerous solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums at home and abroad, including presentations at the Museum of Fine Arts Leipzig, the G2 Kunsthalle, and various institutional and independent projects. In 2013, he was awarded the 10th Art Prize of the Leipziger Volkszeitung.
